What is CPAP / BiLevel / APAP? CPAP stands for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure and refers to the mechanical unit delivering this pressure which is measured (titrated) during a sleep study to determine a therapeutic pressure. The continuous flow of air through a mask acts as an "air splint" to maintain an open airway, thus eliminating sleep apnea along with the associated snoring. BiLevel stands for a CPAP which delivers two different pressures, one preset pressure for inspiration, and a lower preset pressure for expiration. APAP is Automatic Positive Airway Pressure, and differs from CPAP as computer controlled algorithms determine an effective pressure which may change based upon patient response during use. |
