A Night at A Sleep Center The following should explain what to expect at a typical Sleep Center. Please note every Center has its own operational pathway and each differs in its own special way. The sleep study is a completely non-invasive, painless procedure. Referral. The process usually begins with a visit to your physician (a consultation). You may have been excessively tired lately, and upon physical examination and review of your history and presenting complaint your physician will prescribe a sleep study at your local Sleep Center. The prescription along with your history and physical are forwarded to the Sleep Center. Scheduling. The Sleep Center will contact you to schedule your overnight stay and review and confirm your insurance benefits. Instructions. The Sleep Center should provide you with general information about the study, i.e., bring your own pillow, toiletries, etc. Never use lotions, gel and other hair products, and remove nail polish if applicable to avoid sensor interference. Night of the Study. You would arrive at the Sleep Center at your scheduled time, and the technician will request you fill out a "Night Time Questionnaire" and complete required procedural paperwork which usually includes billing, registration, and review of privacy policies. The "Hook Up." When ready, the technician will hook you up to all the sensors. These include four or more Electroencephalogram (EEG) leads, chin and leg Electromyogram (EMG), Electro-oculogram (EOG), nasal and oral airflow sensors, thoracic and abdominal respiratory movements, oxygen saturation, pulse rate, and Electrocardiogram (ECG). Lights Out. When the hook-up is complete, the room lights are turned off and the study begins. Your study is monitored all night by the technician and recorded on video. The Morning. You will be awakened at a predetermined time, and all sensors will be removed. You will be asked to complete a "Rise-time Questionnaire" and when ready, you exit the Sleep Center. Test Results. Tests results are reviewed (interpreted) by a physician sleep specialist, and treatment recommendations and test results are discussed with your referring physician, which may or may not be the same as the interpreting physician. Your doctor should complete this process within 2 weeks of your study. |
