To learn more about the following sleep disorders, visit Sleep Links: Sleep Apnea: Characterized by cessations of breathing during sleep, usually defined as lasting 10 seconds or more. Estimates indicate the disease afflict over 18 million Americans, and it is linked to cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and stroke. Typical symptoms are snoring and excessive sleepiness. Narcolepsy: A disease that exists in persons who uncontrollably fall asleep at inappropriate times. Restless Legs Syndrome: Characterized by leg movements occurring during sleep that are severe enough to cause a disruption in the quality of sleep. Insomnia: The inability to fall asleep normally. Insomnia can be classified as transient (short term), intermittent (on and off), and chronic (constant). |
